We went over by half an hour. On the 22 nd we discussed her interview and then worked on a speaking/listening lesson which we will continue the 27 th . Our lessons last half an hour longer; they are 1 ½ hour long. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Wei has many questions and I have learned that she sometimes needs more class time.

Date: July 25th Saturday Tutee: Wei Location: Zoom Topic: Needs Assessment, Introduction, and Scheduling Feedback provided: We discussed what areas she would like to focus on, and I gave feedback that I believe her English is notably on the more advanced side, and that we will work with some native materials for our lessons that involve receptive skills. Lessons learned: Time goes by very quickly so even if I do not prepare a full lesson plan, it is a good idea to try and keep track of time and have some materials ready beforehand in order to ensure the session is productive.

We worked on vocabulary and comprehension handouts. He was able to understand the video. We watched it three times and each time he heard something new. We went over terms and words he was unfamiliar with. He was able to use the new vocabulary in sentences and discuss the video. He still has trouble speaking so I corrected pronunciation and grammar. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that if the video is fun the student will be more engaged. I was happy he liked the lesson. He was more confident today.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This tutee was very easy to work with and I am grateful to have gotten him! He showed up to every lesson and was a nice person to talk to. Despite this, I learned that not every single tutee I may have in the future will be like this.

Taking small breaks and talking about other things casually will ensure the student comes back refreshed and energized once we are back on topic.

For listening, listened to the audio with the student and made sure the questions they answered were accurate in grammar. For writing, we read the prompt and what he wrote, also making sure it was correct in grammar.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Focusing on activities that are relevant to the tutee's class materials is important to keep the student engaged on topics that they are already learning, as compared to trying to give the tutee a bunch of new information that they will not retain long-term.

For example, I taught the tutee the word rigged as we were talking about World Cup matches.

We spoke about American social norms, the World Cup and differences between China, Colombia and the United States. We went over her interview for Front Desk Assistant at the Heritage Museum in Dodd Hall. I emphasized the importance of listening to the interview questions carefully, so she provides the appropriate answers. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned a lot about my tutee and her personal background. It was good speaking practice for her and for her listening skills. The tutee learned the importance of paying attention to questions. I would ask a question and she was providing information I had not asked for.

The reading activity was a bit long, so the tutee did not stay engaged as compared to other activities done in the past.

Materials: YouTube and a video player Feedback: She helped them identify nouns and start distinguishing between nouns and pronouns because they usually just identified the subject and not nouns, specifically. Lesson: She did a good job of making the activity fun because we were watching and singing School House Rock and discussing Disney movies. We worked on words that he didn't know, and also phrasing sentences better so they make sense.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: The tutee likes to talk about a lot of different things. This can be good on one side as it improves his English as I give suggestions/corrections, but I also have to sometimes reign the conversation back to the topic.

We also worked on grammar for the speaker notes of the presentation for the tutee.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Tutee is very good at receiving feedback and correcting pronunciation on words. Working on breaking up the words based on the syllable helps the student pronounce words more accurately.

July 8 th Skill: Perfect modals Teacher presentation: Dr. Rios introduced the new topic by doing two things: he both compared the perfect models to the normal modals, such as might vs might have, and he explained the perfect modals in isolation by describing what each of the three perfect modals does/means/communicates. He then went through several examples of only “might have” explaining the meaning, emphasizing that the perfect modals describe a conditional in the past. July 7 th Skill: Adjective clauses Teacher presentation: Dr. Rios started with a review of defining vs non defining adjective clauses. And then provided a worksheet for students as extra practice with the topic. He worked through the worksheet with students and allowed them to provide potential answers to the questions. Classroom Management. Dr. Rios spent the first 10 minutes reviewing the material, and then spent the rest of the 40 going through the worksheet. He introduced each question and then allowed students to workshop the answers for a few minutes as they reached a final answer. July 1 st Skill: Adjective Clauses and relative pronouns Teacher presentation: Dr. Rios started with a review of yesterday’s material comparing defining and non-defining adjective clauses using a T chart. Afterwards, he did a class activity where each student selected a slip of paper with an adjective clause on it, and each student read it aloud. Afterwards, as a class they reviewed where the clause was in each sentence. The focus was on practicing material that was already learned. Classroom Management: Dr. Rios spent the duration of the class guiding students through the exercises, giving most time to allow the class to propose answers and figure out their own errors and solutions. The rest of the time spent was used clarifying rules, giving feedback, and explaining why answers do and do not work. June 30 th Skill: Relative pronouns and adjective clauses Teacher Presentation: Dr. Rios started by outlining/reviewing the rules of relative pronouns and how they introduce adjective clauses, He then walked the class through some exercises to determine which relative pronoun to use. Afterwards, he taught the difference between defining and non-defining adjective clauses, which helped clarify some of the previous problems (inductive approach). Then he walked the class through another exercise that evaluated this new rule that was just taught. Classroom management: Dr. Rios spent most of his time walking the students through the problems, only explaining explicitly when needed.   June 22 Skill: Past Perfect vs Past Perfect Progressive Teacher presentation: Dr. Rios first reviewed the past perfect and then taught the past perfect progressive rules, ultimately comparing the two. Afterwards, he worked through a worksheet with the class by calling on the students to answer. During this process, he encouraged students to think about the grammatical rule without outright revealing the correct answer. Only if students were totally stuck did he then reveal the answer. Classroom Management: Dr. Rios kept his explanations succinct yet thorough and gave ample time for the students to each contribute an answer without spending too much time on any one given question. As they are still a child, activities that are long make it harder to understand and they do not engage as much.

Feedback provided to the tutee: I helped my tutee with grammar errors and showed him how to write complete sentences when answering a question. We worked on writing sentences from prompts.  Some were based on an article on UFC. When we finished that we worked on conversation/speaking. I corrected his pronunciation and when he did not know a word/vocabulary I taught him the correct term and then had him use the new word in other sentences. We worked on answering in complete sentences. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned how to help my tutee without giving him the answers. He was very pleased with what he learned, he said it helped a lot. He was also able to practice pronunciation and learn new words.

  CLASS OBSERVATION #5 Date/Time: 6/24/2026; 2:00 p.m.; Ryan Flemming Topic/Skill: Listening/Advanced Teacher’s Presentation: Mr. Flemming presented class with a lecture series on space flight/tourism. Classroom Management: Mr. Fleming had students listen to an audio and answer questions. Students answered the question via Canvas and discussed answers in class. Materials: Power Point, worksheet and an episcope. Student Participation: Each student answered a question after each question and chose from multiple choice the gist of the lecture. They learned the term “gist”. Mr. Flemming then had a dictocomp exercise. He spoke at normal speed and repeated each short paragraph a few times. Feedback Provided: Mr. Flemming gave students time and was willing to read each short paragraph more than twice. Students are reminded of a quiz on Thursday. Classroom Management: Had students work on a worksheet as a class. Materials: Power Point, worksheet and an episcope. Student Participation: Each student read a section of the worksheet and provided the article they thought was correct. Dr. Ríos provided explanations as the students provided answers such as A/AN/THE = 1. The use of |A| when the following word beings with a consonant and |AN| when the following word begins with a vowel. He explains the connection of sounds as in |AN| HOUR= H is silent. Classroom Management: Dr. Ciappetta had students sit around the table and interview a fellow student. I paired up with a student and he interviewed me. Materials: Worksheet. Student Participation: Students after conducting the interview, then had to answer from memory the answers their interviewee gave them. As they were answering Dr. Ciappetta corrected their pronunciation. Students must bring an article to class and teach for a whole class period. Dr. Ríos handed out the presentation schedule and the handout to prepare for the presentation. Each student will present on a section of “A Study on the Korean Culture (History) Education for Foreign Learners”. Date/Time: June 30th, 2026, 8:30-9:30pm  Location: Quincy  Topic/Skill: Phrasal Verbs  Feedback provided to the tutee: Showed short videos using the new phrasal verbs in context, then had the tutee practice using them in their own sentences.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I showed different videos to the student, which really engaged the student. The student told me he liked the videos, so I will be doing more of that in the future. 
  Grace Toole Duncan CO #2 Date/Time: June 23 Topic/skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: There was a lot of casual conversation at the beginning so that everyone could practice speaking in English. After, he discussed naming conventions and played a prerecorded video about three of the best movie trilogies of all time. Next, they did a fill-in-the-blank activity where they put words from the video into sentences. Materials: the video player and a handout with a fill-in-the-blank activity Feedback: He had them listen to the video again to make sure they had put the correct words in the blank. He also highlighted transitional phrases that they had used like “It’s interesting that…” and “The first reason… a second reason might be….” Lesson: I learned that you might spend as much or more time on chatting and review than on new material because practice is just as important as new lessons.  
  Grace Toole Duncan CO #1 Date/Time: June 23 Topic/skill: Reading/vocabulary Teacher presentation: He reviewed the vocabulary they had covered last time and then had them read an article that used those vocabulary words. Materials: The article was located on Canvas, and he used the white board when covering vocab. Feedback: He encouraged them to use each vocabulary word in a sentence of their own before moving on to the next word to make sure that they were using the words correctly, and he praised them for coming up with their own sentences. He also walked around while they were reading so they could ask questions. Lesson: I learned that you can use AI to generate the same article at different proficiency levels and I learned that you might have to repeat what you say and what you hear to avoid miscommunication. He also showed me how to use Britannica when teaching a certain topic because it has so much contextual information.

Materials: Grammar workbook Feeback:Teacher corrected how the students spoke in the future tense by explaining the importance of the do and don't when speaking. Lessons: I learned that when speaking english, people say gonna, don't, and won't which is hard for non-english speakers to adjust too.
