Feedback provided to the tutee: I helped my tutee with grammar errors and showed him how to write complete sentences when answering a question. Ex: Q: What is your favorite sport? A: My favorite sport is soccer. Helped Neil with pronunciation. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned how to help my tutee without giving him the answers. He was very pleased with what he learned, he said it helped a lot. He was also able to practice pronunciation.

  Karen Vargas TEFL120-B 6/30/2021 CLASS OBSERVATION BLOG   Date/Time: 6/22/2026; 10:00 a.m.; Dr. Angel Ríos Topic/Skill: Grammar/Verb Tense-Past Perfect Teacher’s Presentation: Classroom Management: Materials: Power Point, worksheet and an episcope. Student Participation: Students were asked to give Past Perfect examples. There was a practice session, there were two class activities. The first activity was a table that would help the students with a quiz. There was a second activity that asked the students to identify mistakes in a sentence and correct them. Students were given homework as they had missed a class the previous week. For homework they had to watch a video and describe what happens using Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous. Feedback Provided: The teacher provided detailed feedback on their grammar and speaking skills and gave great explanations of students’ questions. Date/Time: June 29th, 2026, 4:30-5:30pm  Location: Student Union  Topic/Skill: Preparation for upcoming quiz  Feedback provided to the tutee: Prepared for upcoming quiz by reviewing study materials and practice materials that I created.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Helping the student in other things that are not language related can still be helpful in the long term. For example, I showed the tutee how to use Quizlet and filter videos on YouTube for a class assignment.

Date/Time: June 26th, 4:30-5:30pm Location: Student Union   Topic/Skill: Preparation for upcoming quiz   Feedback provided to the tutee: Gave feedback on readings and speaking assignments given in class, and well as preparing for an upcoming quiz by reviewing study materials.   Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Let the student dictate what they want to review, to an extent. I let my tutee pick the topic they wanted to cover, and from there I helped them go over said topic. 

Date/Time: June 25th Topic/Skill: Grammar (Articles and Past Perfect Continuous) Teacher Presentation: The teacher explained when to use indefinite and definite articles depending on countable or uncountable nouns, as well as when to use the past perfect continuous. Classroom Management: The teacher ensured that students did not have any notes open during the quiz, as well as making sure they were all on the same page.  Materials: Projector and Canvas  Student Participation: Students participated in two fill in the blank activities that were projected on the screen, one on articles and the other on the past perfect continuous.  Feedback Provided: The teacher provided feedback on the correct article to use in a sentence, giving real life examples to encourage participation.  Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Give students engaging activities before a quiz so their minds are fresh on the topic and they are more likely to score higher. 

Date/Time: June 24th Topic/Skill: Speaking (Illustration presentation)  Teacher Presentation: The teacher had students watch a recording of a presentation from a past CIES student on a super cars.  Classroom Management: The teacher walked around the room to ensure students were creating a form with different presentation topics for all other students to vote on.  Materials: Canvas and Projector  Student Participation: Students needed to provide at least one example of topics for their presentation in class discussion, and then brainstorm at least 5 on their own.  Feedback Provided: The teacher provided feedback on the topics that students needed to pick for their presentations.  Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Having students talk about something that interests them and others keeps them more engaged in class, as compared to a topic that does not interests students as much. 

Date/Time: June 24th Topic/Skill: Reading (Drums in Nigeria) Teacher Presentation: The teacher had the students read an excerpt about different types of drums in Nigeria.  Classroom Management: The teacher would walk around the classroom to look at student's laptops to ensure that they were looking things up as instructed on Google.  Materials: White board and Canvas  Student Participation: All students had to read a paragraph from the excerpt to practice speaking skills and pronunciation, as well as point out any vocabulary that they did not know.   Feedback Provided: The teacher provided feedback on pronunciation on words that students said incorrectly and encouraged them to connect the word with a real life situation so they would remember the word.   Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Asking students to connect vocab words to a real-life situation or story to increase engagement, and so they can fully learn the word and increase thei...

Date/Time: June 24, 2026 Topic/Skill: practice writing articles in a sentence. Teacher presentation: The teacher went over the homework, and asked students to show their answers and explain why they chose thoses answers. Classroom management: Each student shared their answers Materials: worksheet Feedback: The students provided feedback about why an article does or does not work in a sentences. Lessons: I learned that allowing students to make mistakes and correct themselves is essential in teaching, because it allows students to understand why they did something wrong. This allows students to not make the same mistakes in the future,  when the teacher provides a detailed explanation.

Date/Time: June 23rd Topic/Skill: Listening (World Cup) Teacher Presentation: The teacher played an audio about the World Cup stats.  Classroom Management: The teacher had students take notes during the audio lecture for students to be able to explain what they heard during the audio and compare with one another.  Materials: White board and Google Doc  Student Participation: Everyone needed to provide explain what they heard from the audio and pick which team was the underdog, as well as if they would rather be apart of a big or small team.  Feedback Provided: The teacher provided feedback on an assignment students had to complete after class discussion, matching the word with the definition.  Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: The lesson can be a topic that is more casual, but leads to conversation, so something that is interesting to the students, such as the World Cup. 

 Date/ Time: June 23, 2026 Topic/Skill: Asked students to watch a video about Mission San Luis and answer the comprehension questions. Teacher presentation: The teacher played the video for the students,' and read an article about the history of Mission San Luis Classroom management: The teacher asked the same question for each student after the video was over Student participation: Each student answered the questions Feedback provided: The teacher explained any words the students did not understand from the article Lessons: It is imporant to read articles slowly and explain the terms students might not understand.

Date/Time: June 22nd, 4:30-5:30pm Location: Student Union   Topic/Skill: Needs Assessment  Feedback provided to the tutee: It is okay to make mistakes, as you will grow from them and your English will improve. Don't be shy when correcting yourself or asking others to slow down when speaking.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: ESL student wants to focus on improving listening skills first, as that is their weakest point compared to reading, writing, speaking, and grammar.

 Date/Time: June 22, 2026 Topic/Skill: listening to a lecture and summarizing the information heard Teacher presentation: The teacher asked questions about the lecture before showing the audio to engage students' understanding of the topic. Classroom management: The teacher provided a lecture for the students to watch all together. Materials: video lecture Student Particpation: Everyone discussed their answers about the lecture Feedback provided: The teacher asked students' to explain the lecture in detail and wrote down key words on the boards they kept messing up while listening Lessons: I learned that the topic being taught matters. For instance, the teacher's lecture was about the FIFA World Cup. This topic creates universal interest among the students, creating more engagement through listening and conversation.  

Date/Time: June 22, 2026 Topic/Skill: Asking students to recite what their classmates said in the questionnaires they filled out last class. Teacher presentation: The teacher asked questions from the worksheet to see if the students remembered what their partner discussed. Classroom management: The teacher gave the students five minutes to study their answers before reciting them. Student participation: All students responded to the teacher's questions about the other students. Feedback provided: The teacher corrected the students' pronunciation when speaking and made them repeat the sentence to improve their speaking skills. Lesson: I learned that patience and constant repetition reveals the necessary tools to acquire when asking students to speak in English.

Date/Time: June 22nd Topic/Skill: Grammar (Present verbs)  Teacher Presentation: The teacher explained the frequency of verbs used in the English language as well as listing when to use them.  Classroom Management: The teacher stayed on top of students to stay engaged, especially if they went on their phones.  Materials: PowerPoint Student Participation: Everyone needed to provide an example to get the teacher out of jury duty.  Feedback Provided: The teacher provided feedback on the right tense to use in a sentence depending on what the student was trying to say.  Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Go with the flow and be casual with the students to keep them interested in the lesson, as well as having fun with them.
