CLASS OBSERVATION #5

Date/Time: 6/24/2026; 2:00 p.m.; Ryan Flemming

Topic/Skill: Listening/Advanced

Teacher’s Presentation: Mr. Flemming presented class with a lecture series on space flight/tourism.

Classroom Management: Mr. Fleming had students listen to an audio and answer questions. Students answered the question via Canvas and discussed answers in class.

Materials: Power Point, worksheet and an episcope.

Student Participation: Each student answered a question after each question and chose from multiple choice the gist of the lecture. They learned the term “gist”. Mr. Flemming then had a dictocomp exercise. He spoke at normal speed and repeated each short paragraph a few times.

Feedback Provided: Mr. Flemming gave students time and was willing to read each short paragraph more than twice. He gave each student feedback during the survey and explained why the answer was wrong when they gave the wrong answer.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Mr. Flemming timed the class; an alarm went over when the fifty minutes were up. He was very patient and made the class fun. I had never heard of dictocomp and it is a very good listening tool and practice. He allowed me to walk around and look at students’ writing during the dictocomp.

We agreed to work on slang, idioms, expressions, etc. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Even advanced speakers want to practice and improve. Also, Dojun is practicing his English for the joy of it, not necessarily because he needs it.   Date/Time: July 7, 10-11 Location: Zoom Topic/skill: Idioms from Shakespeare Feedback provided to the student: I told him he’s very good at reading and at figuring out the meaning of something from context. We discussed formal vs informal and common vs uncommon expressions.   CLASS OBSERVATION #4 Date/Time: 6/23/2026; 10:00 a.m.; Dr. Angel Ríos Topic/Skill: Grammar Articles A/AN/THE Teacher’s Presentation: Dr. Ríos began class with homework corrections. Students are reminded of a quiz on Thursday. Classroom Management: Had students work on a worksheet as a class. Materials: Power Point, worksheet and an episcope. Student Participation: Each student read a section of the worksheet and provided the article they thought was correct. Dr. Ríos provided explanations as the students provided answers such as A/AN/THE = 1. The use of |A| when the following word beings with a consonant and |AN| when the following word begins with a vowel. He explains the connection of sounds as in |AN| HOUR= H is silent. He also explained the use of definite articles and how no articles are used with uncountable nouns.
