Topic/skill: Grammar

Teacher presentation: We watched the School House Rock video about nouns and she paused it on every sentence so that the group could identify the nouns being used in the song.

Materials: YouTube and a video player

Feedback: She helped them identify nouns and start distinguishing between nouns and pronouns because they usually just identified the subject and not nouns, specifically.

Lesson: She did a good job of making the activity fun because we were watching and singing School House Rock and discussing Disney movies. There was not a dull reading about nouns, but rather a video and discussion that got everyone excited about participating.

Topic/Skill: Speaking

Teacher presentation: She split us into groups so that we could do a debate about whether Ronaldo or Messi is a better overall football player. She gave us a handout to write our arguments and counterarguments on.

Materials: A handout to organize notes.

Feedback: She asked a lot of clarifying questions during the presentations to develop the content of their arguments and she corrected their pronunciation whenever they were difficult to understand.

Lesson: Debate about a topic that everyone cares about is a good way to get everyone participating. The class got so excited and everyone was speaking the whole time.

Topic/Skill: Listening/Writing

Teacher presentation: This was a listening class but the students had already listened to the assigned reading multiple times, so she worked on correcting their writing skill, as they were typing up their responses to the required audio sample.

Materials: They were typing in shared Google docs, so she could see and correct their mistakes as they typed them.

Feedback: As they turned in each draft, she would give them comments on grammar and content. I was surprised by how competent she assumed them to be, as she had them looking up sources and doing research for their responses.

Lesson: Even at the intermediate level, you can push students to support their claims with evidence when writing.
