Skill: Relative pronouns and adjective clauses

Teacher Presentation: Dr. Rios started by outlining/reviewing the rules of relative pronouns and how they introduce adjective clauses, He then walked the class through some exercises to determine which relative pronoun to use. Afterwards, he taught the difference between defining and non-defining adjective clauses, which helped clarify some of the previous problems (inductive approach). Then he walked the class through another exercise that evaluated this new rule that was just taught.

Classroom management: Dr. Rios spent most of his time walking the students through the problems, only explaining explicitly when needed. Each student was given enough time to think about the answer before committing to it.

Materials: worksheet, document cam/projector

Student participation: Every student participated giving answers to the worksheet problems that were walked through

Feedback provided: Dr. Rios gave plenty of feedback on how to think about the question/rules in order to lead students to the right answers. If students were incorrect, he would not immediately correct them. Only once students had given their answers and committed to them did he explain why it was or was not incorrect.

Lessons learned: When introducing a concept or topic with a  lot of moving parts, it can be beneficial to introduce and encourage mastery of certain steps before completely explaining others. Sometimes, mastering some of the first steps instead of understanding/mastering all of them at first will make the subsequent ones easier to understand and master.

  CLASS OBSERVATION #4 Date/Time: 6/23/2026; 10:00 a.m.; Dr. Angel Ríos Topic/Skill: Grammar Articles A/AN/THE Teacher’s Presentation: Dr. Ríos began class with homework corrections. Students are reminded of a quiz on Thursday. Classroom Management: Had students work on a worksheet as a class. Materials: Power Point, worksheet and an episcope. Student Participation: Each student read a section of the worksheet and provided the article they thought was correct. Dr. Ríos provided explanations as the students provided answers such as A/AN/THE = 1. The use of |A| when the following word beings with a consonant and |AN| when the following word begins with a vowel. He explains the connection of sounds as in |AN| HOUR= H is silent. He also explained the use of definite articles and how no articles are used with uncountable nouns.
